Recipe: Spicy turkey sloppy joes

On a whim, I bought ground turkey and assumed I would use it for something. After sitting in my freezer for a few too many months, I decided to explore my options.

I immediately thought of an easy recipe that wouldn’t require other ingredients outside my pantry. This comforting and heart healthy sandwich made for a great lunch on a chilly October afternoon.

1 tbsp. canola or vegetable oil

1 lb ground turkey

1-2 cloves garlic, minced

1 8 oz. can of tomato sauce

1/4 cup ground sugar

1/4 cup barbecue sauce

1 tbsp. worcestershire sauce

1 tsp. cumin

1 tsp. cayenne pepper

1 tsp red chili flakes

Hamburger buns  or white bread

1. In a large pan, heat the oil on medium-high heat. Add turkey and garlic, breaking with a spoon until browned, 3-5 minutes.

2. Mix the tomato sauce with sugar, worcestershire sauce, barbecue sauce, cumin, cayenne and chili flakes into the turkey mixture. Season with 1/4 tsp. salt and pepper. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

3. Spoon onto bread or hamburger buns and eat it knife and fork style. Enjoy!
